Managing an occupational health clinic can bring many business challenges (low quality, inefficient care delivery, rising costs, and waste) that are not value-added to customers. Many healthcare settings struggle to effectively develop and manage process improvement today. This session will provide specific actions healthcare leaders can take to appropriately design and execute process improvement opportunities while using simplicity and agility to govern performance. We will explore why design can be simple; what are OKRs?; How to get the most out of an opportunity; Measuring for success without analysis paralysis; and ensuring the right team members are selected for each project. In addition, there will be specific process improvement design examples. This session will teach about how to effectively use a Lean visual management tool, Value Stream Mapping (VSM), in an occupational health setting. This tool can clarify a process visually, enable innovative ideas, and visually show the benefits of a new approach, verifying effectiveness of solutions to clinic-based problems using the scientific method.
1. Describe simple steps to design an effective process improvement opportunity.
2. Identify objectives that can immediately work towards process improvement.
3. Understand how to apply the VSM to the processes of an occupational health clinic.
