In general, the majority of clinicians have been trained under the biomedical paradigm. While many now understand that chronic musculoskeletal conditions are best understood from a biopsychosocial perspective, there is a general lack of understanding and appreciation for some components of the biopsychosocial model. This presentation will focus on patient and provider attitudes and beliefs surrounding the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of common musculoskeletal conditions and on the effects these attitudes and beliefs have on the outcomes of treatment. Ultimately, it is hoped that this knowledge will result in better treatment outcomes for workers affected by chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
1. Describe how patient attitudes and beliefs affect the treatment and outcomes of chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
2. Describe how clinician attitudes and beliefs affect the treatment and outcomes of chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
3. Implement evidence-based recommendations in the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
