How to Find Reliable Occupational Safety and Health information Online Efficiently

Session Description:
Finding reliable Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) information online without a roadmap could be as difficult as finding an address in a city you have never been before. The purpose of this workshop is to give the audience the tools to make a more accurate and faster search, thus saving time and money.

After exploring expectations and commonly used strategies, the facilitators list search engines and online sources recommended. Based on questions from the participants, best strategies are introduced and discussed including PubMed/MEDLINE, the Virtual Health Library, LILACS and SciELO (Latin America), Cochrane reviews, evidence-based guidelines, synopses e.g. Up-to-date, Google (Scholar), YouTube, Wikipedia and using authorative sources for chemical or biological exposure and effects. Finally, the relevance of the information found, and the complex issue of quality appraisal is discussed.

The workshop is based on the book “Occupational Safety and Health online, how to find reliable information” (third edition, 2016), free to download at www.ldoh.net.

Learning Objectives:
• Know the most important strategies, search engines and online sources to find answers to OSH questions.
• Able to judge the relevance of the information found.
• Able to estimate the reliability of the information found.
