Myofascial Pain Part II, Theory and Practice – Relationship to Regional and Central Pain mechanisms, Clinical Management implications and demonstration of therapeutic tools (Trigger Point Injections, Myofascial Release, etc.)
Regional soft-tissue complaints due to simple muscle–tendon strain, inflammation or degeneration are common and typically resolve. However, regional pain syndromes (e.g., myofascial pain syndrome (MPS), chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS) often occur after injury and symptoms overlap extensively with symptoms due to simple muscle–tendon strain. These regional syndromes typically have symptoms not explained by simple strain mechanisms, and which respond poorly to routine treatments - leaving clinicians and patients frustrated.
This presentation reviews clinically relevant medical literature regarding regional and central pain mechanisms (spine-related mechanisms; central sensitization; fascia densification) and syndromes (MPS, CRPS) and details their clinical management implications for the practicing clinician. Will review recent literature indicating MPS therapies may work in CRPS treatment. Trigger point injection and myofascial release techniques will be demonstrated.
Learning Objectives:
- Be aware of the mechanisms underlying the clinical findings that characterize regional pain syndromes like myofascial pain syndrome.
- Have practical awareness via demonstration of how to apply treatments for Myofascial Pain Syndrome.
- Gain awareness of recent literature indicating MPS therapies such as trigger point injections may have a role in CRPS treatment.
