Description:
As states continue to reopen following the lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, ACOEM’s Working Safely in the COVID-19 Era: Case Studies and Lessons Learned Virtual Symposium will provide critical information and tools for occupational and environmental medicine (OEM) professionals, their multidisciplinary teams, as well as, employers to continue the safe return to work (RTW) of employees. This Symposium is unique as emerging challenges of working during the pandemic and potential pitfalls to avoid will be discussed along with specific scenarios and examples provided. COVID-19 related topics will include updates on testing, contact tracing, and where we are in terms of vaccine development. There will also be discussion on ergonomic issues, workers’ compensation and telemedicine. Updates on airborne transmission/masking/ventilation will be provided and an interdisciplinary panel including industrial hygiene and safety professionals will review the built environment. The Symposium will continue to explore the effects of the pandemic on mental health and health care worker wellness, public health disparities, and patients with prolonged and delayed recovery from infection. Lastly, updates will be provided on industry-specific guidance that can be applied to workplace environments.

Learning Objectives:
1. Cite new developments in PCR and antibody testing as well as vaccine development.
2. Assess the psychological impacts that the pandemic has on workers, especially health care providers, and the strategies and resources needed to assist them.
3. Explain ergonomic issues including safety and proper equipment for employees working from home and how claims are being processed under workers’ compensation.
4. Describe what prolonged and delayed recovery looks like for some patients infected with COVID-19.
5. Cite ways to alter flow, space, and occupancy in the built environment during the pandemic.
6. Identify updated guidance on health and safety measures with a focus on several industries (e.g., health care, transportation, maritime, food/grocery).
