ACOEM’s Essentials of Occupational Medicine program will be comprised of approximately 60 individual courses in 15 sections and provides an excellent and comprehensive introduction to the clinical, technical, and professional concepts of the field for the non-specialist or new entrant.
The Musculoskeletal Medicine Section includes six courses:
MUSCULOSKELETAL SHOULDER
The first course in the Musculoskeletal Section covers Musculoskeletal Shoulder injuries which are the third most common work-related injury and accounts for 10% of all worker’s compensation costs. This course is designed to equip health professionals with an effective return to work management which includes understanding job requirements and the functional ability of the patient with these problems.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:
1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the shoulder.
2. Describe common shoulder disorders.
3. Conduct a focused shoulder physical examination.
4. Apply decision-making regarding the ordering of shoulder diagnostic testing.
5. Demonstrate evidence-based treatments for common shoulder conditions.
6. Manage return to work for patients with shoulder conditions
MUSCULOSKELETAL SPINE
This Musculoskeletal Spine course is designed to be an introduction to spine disorders and equip health professionals with an understanding of the job requirements and the functional abilities of patients with these problems.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:
1. Understand the anatomy and physiology of the spine.
2. Describe common spinal disorders.
3. Conduct a focused spinal physical examination.
4. Apply decision-making regarding the ordering of spinal diagnostic testing.
5. Demonstrate evidence-based treatments for common spinal conditions.
6. Manage return to work for patients with spinal conditions
MUSCULOSKELETAL WRIST AND ELBOW
This Musculoskeletal Wrist and Elbow course is designed to be an introduction to wrist and elbow disorders and equip health professionals with an understanding of the job requirements and the functional abilities of patients with these problems.

1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the wrist and elbow.
2. Describe common wrist and elbow disorders.
3. Conduct a focused wrist and elbow physical examination.

MUSCULOSKELETAL HIP AND KNEE
This Musculoskeletal Hip and Knee course is designed to be an introduction to hip and knee disorders and equip health professionals with an understanding of the job requirements and the functional abilities of patients with these problems.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:
1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the knee and hip.
2. Describe common knee and hip disorders.
3. Conduct a focused knee and hip physical examination.
4. Apply decision-making regarding the ordering of diagnostic testing.
5. Demonstrate evidence-based treatments for common knee and hip conditions.
6. Manage return to work for patients with these conditions.
MUSCULOSKELETAL FOOT AND ANKLE
The Musculoskeletal Foot and Ankle injuries that are commonly encountered as work-related injuries provide an overview of appropriate examinations that can yield an accurate diagnosis. This course is designed to equip health professionals to understand job requirements and the functional abilities of patients with these problems.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:
1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the ankle and foot.
2. Describe common ankle and foot disorders.
3. Conduct a focused ankle and foot physical examination.
4. Apply decision-making regarding the ordering of diagnostic testing.
5. Demonstrate evidence-based treatments for common ankle and foot conditions.
6. Manage return to work for patients with ankle and foot conditions
COMPRESSION NEUROPATHIES
Compression neuropathies are common issues that affect workers. Properly diagnosing these syndromes is critical to treat them early, which will lead to better outcomes. Evidence-based treatments for these conditions continue to be re-examined in the literature, and it may be surprising to the learner what treatment strategies have been shown to change the outcome and which ones do not. This Compression Neuropathies course is designed to be an introduction to compression neuropathies and equip health professionals with an understanding of the job requirements and the functional abilities of patients with these problems.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:
1. Identify the common compression neuropathies that will be seen by the occupational medicine physician.
2. Understand the anatomy and physiology of the compressed nerves.
3. Conduct proper physical examination techniques and order appropriate tests to diagnose the conditions correctly.
4. Implement appropriate treatment.
5. Know when to refer appropriately.
6. Manage return to work.

Expiration Policy
As a provider accredited by the ACCME, ACOEM is responsible for ensuring our education is fair and balanced and that any clinical content presented supports safe, effective patient care. As such, ACOEM must include an original release date and a termination (expiration) date on products. Content must either be reviewed once every three years or expire after three years, which is why courses have an expiration date. This date not only denotes when the course will no longer be available to new users but also includes the final date to claim AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
